GORETTI POMBO (1994, Willemstad)
Goretti Pombo graduated from Willem de Kooning Academy in 2020 with a bachelor’s degree in Fine Arts.

Hailing from Curaçao, Goretti embarked on her artistic journey after completing high school by enrolling at Instituto Buena Bista in 2014. It was during her time at IBB that Goretti delved into the boundless possibilities that the world of art had to offer. In addition to expanding her artistic horizons, she was confronted with a reality that starkly contrasted with the conservative Catholic upbringing she had known. This environment perpetuated the marginalization of women, subjecting them to feelings of inferiority in comparison to men. It further involved slut-shaming and body-shaming, all while promoting the conventional narrative of a picture-perfect family.

By 2016, Goretti had successfully completed her studies at IBB and transitioned to the Willem de Kooning Academy. The academic curriculum itself, combined with exposure to a more progressive society, served as a catalyst for a profound mental transformation in Goretti. This transformation ultimately led her to embrace a newfound sense of liberation and self-assuredness in expressing her identity. This shift was also evident in her artistic creations.

Goretti’s art serves as a medium through which she channels her personal experiences, often reinterpreting them through a lens of playfulness and absurdity. Embedded within her work are narratives that rebel against societal norms and expectations imposed upon women. Simultaneously, her creations reflect a deep-seated fear of monotony and stagnation in life. As a result, her creative process is infused with elements of play, wonder, and humor, which drive her to explore a diverse range of artistic mediums including drawing, painting, zines, performances, videos, textiles, and more. These mediums collectively form a cohesive tapestry that allows her to authentically convey her current emotional and intellectual fervor.
