Did you miss the artist talk by IBB alumna Vesuhely Americaan? You can watch it in it’s entirety here:
IBB is celebrating 15 years of art education and preparation on Curaçao this year. As part of this celebration we are also highlighting our alumni who have completed their preparation at IBB and went on to continue their education and further development as creative / artistic professionals.
The second alumna in this series of artist talks was Vesuhely Americaan. After finishing her preparation at IBB, Americaan completed a BA in fine arts at HKU in Utrecht. For the last two years she has been a student councilor at IBB and preparing for continuing her studies with a masters.
Vesuhely Americaan is a visual artist based in Curacao. She holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts at the University of Arts Utrecht (HKU) in the Netherlands. Creative writing is a big part of her practice. She often uses writing in her videos, performances, and installations. The main themes in her practice are, socio-political issues and identity, both as an individual and as a group. Her work is often a commentary on situations she encounters in her daily life. In her work, there is a constant search for identity, a need to rediscover it, and then create a new identity. The basis of her research is colonial history which is a subject she always encounters while trying to understand our concept of identity and our behavior as a collective.
