During All You Can Art 3 we added a new element to the exhibition. During the earlier editions we worked with partners outside of the museum on various social projects. These included projects in homes for the elderly but also a vocational school. These projects would usually entail that an AYCA member would go to the participating institution and hold a workshop there with the people that live there or make use of the institution’s services. This year we expanded on that practice by introducing the SRV truck. These trucks used to be driving markets that would bring products to areas that weren’t served by supermarkets. We changed the SRV name from ‘Samen Rationeel Verkopen’ to ‘Social Rijdende Verbeelding'(Mobile Social Imagination). With this truck we have more freedom of movement as we turned the truck into a mobile workshop.
During AYCA3 the SRV truck will be showing up at some of our old partners but also new locations to engage with the public and make art.
Up until now three artists have used the SRV truck to go work on locations outside of Kunsthal Rotterdam.
David Bade took the truck to two different locations in Rotterdam. The first one was the Hotspot Hutspot in Lombardijen. Hotspot Hutspot is a social project where people are given a second chance at life through food service. This specific location was housed in an elderly care facility. The second location Bade took the truck was Deliplein. This location is a newly re-developed area of rotterdam. It used to be an old red light district of Rotterdam and is currently being re-developed into a living and leisure area.
During his visits at these locations Bade spoke with the public and engaged them with various questions. He asked them to react to some basic emotions like anger, fear, happiness and sadness. The participants were asked to write out their thoughts on these emotions on big pieces of canvas using stencils and / or charcoal. The information gathered from these conversations shall become inspiration for later paintings that will be made in the Kunsthal by Bade.
IBB alumnas Goretti Pombo and Marichel Boyé and AYCA summer school participant Dik Kreuk also accompanied Bade on these outings and helped collect information, engage in conversation and gain experience.
IBB alumni and AYCA participating artists Roxette Capriles and Kiem Loon ‘Elvis’ Chen also took the SRV truck to locations for workshops.
Capriles took the truck to an elementary school called De Toermalijn. At this elementary school artists initiatives Friendly Stalking and Skarlokaal set up the project ‘De Zomer Oversteek’ (The Summer Crossing). This project provides activities for children whose parents can’t afford to take them on vacation during the summer break. Capriles introduced the SRV truck as an ice cream truck bringing a surprise for the children at this location. From the truck AYCA summer school students paraded to the elementary school while playing musical instruments. Before proceeding on to the premises there was a negotiation between the two groups. This formed the first interaction between the summer school students and the zomer oversteek participants.
This interaction continued on a later date where the zomer oversteek participants went to the Kunsthal to interact with the summer school students at that location.
Chen took the SRV truck to the Natuurtalent urban farm. The SRV truck was parked right in front of the restaurant that forms the center of this farm. As the day progresses multiple visitors of the farm and restaurant participate in painting with Chen. They either paint their own concepts or work together with Chen on a new painting.
