Artist In Residence Marieke Zwart
Marieke Zwart is an Amsterdam artist that has been residing at the IBB since the beginning of January 2014. She primarily works with drawings and installations, and researches the possibility to, as an artist, work outside of the conventional art context (museums and galleries), because this is where she finds her subjects and inspiration. She places herself next to people of different social groups through portrait-projects. This is how she, as an artist, wants to give people a voice in a new environment, and trough that tries to find her own sound.

Zwart will exhibit her most recent work in the building of IBB and also on the terrain of the Klinika Capriles. During her four-month stay on Curaçao the artist worked with the art students of the IBB and the clients of the psychiatric clinic among others. During the exhibition her new videos, drawings and sculptures will be spread throughout the areas of the IBB and the Capriles terrain, so that the visitors can wander along the works. She herself also wandered across the island in places she did not know, and she hopes that the viewer will now want to join her and cross the unknown paths of Klinika Capriles.
Many things come together that at first glance may seem like they are quite removed from each other: a nude-potrait of a handyman, ‘makamba tourists’ frying in the sun on the beach, a whispered singing of a track by the rapper Kanye West, a struggling cockroach laying on his back, and teaching the art students. The visitor will experience for himself during his tour around the works if and how everything is connected to each other. Marieke Zwart’s approach fits with the IBB, where the viewer will usually be put to work and participation is required.

Everyone is invited to come join our students and the entire IBB team during this great exhibition on friday night May 9, 2014 at 7.30 p.m. at the Instituto Buena Bista (entrance via Klinika Capriles). Furthermore, the exhibition can be seen throughout the month of May from Monday to Friday in the afternoon hours from 13:00 to 18:00 hours.
