The day started of nicely with visitors walking in bright and early, even before opening time! Tours were organized every hour and well guided by our fellow students. Many guests even took their maps with them as a souvenir.
Guests were able to enjoy and participate in the green room presentation, learn about our computer facilities and even see our students at work. There was a pinhole exhibit of the camera’s and photographs that the students made during this and last year’s workshop and also all the students presented their works in their personal studios. People really seemed to enjoy the relaxed ambience and with no doubt the snacks and beverages too!

We are proud to say that the negative comments where almost none existent, but of course every year we have to accept critique and learn new things. Among the lesser comments were things like why we didn’t post the titles and student names at their artworks or that some people aren’t exactly fond of our location. We also noted that some of you asked for the open house to be more elaborate. We’re thinking about ways to tackle these ideas, so we’ll work on it. For sure!
Besides that, almost everyone found that our Open House was very good and they even stated that it was professionally executed. How awesome is that‽ Many parents expressed that IBB gives good guidance and that they notice good development and new potential students said that IBB seems like the perfect place to start.

All in all a great day surrounded by awesome people and we surely couldn’t have done it without you. Thank you all for coming to visit us and we hope to see you again very soon!

By now IBB exsists for five years already and there are more than 15 students studying abroad at art academies or other creative courses. We already have the first students graduating this year!

Portfolio time!
Our students are hard at work getting their portfolios ready for admission at the various art academies.
On top of our art academy students we also have students applying for art teacher and creative therapy this year.
To help them get the best out of their work in their portfolios we have asked our resident artist Yasser Ballemans and invited artists Monica Tormell and Tomas Adolfs to assist our students. They will rearrange, add, remove and where needed have them make new work to maximize their chances of getting admitted. It has been a stressful couple of weeks for the students but we are nearly there!

A little late, but here are, finally, a collection of images that can give an idea of how the carnaval project went.

For those that don’t remember: IBB participated in co-operation with the Capriles Clinic and under the guidance of Visual Artist Yasser Ballemans in the 2012 Curacao Carnival. The chosen theme was Inside-Out and every student and the clients of the Capriles clinic had to make masks and outfits that demonstrated this idea.

Our current artists in residence had an interview on the local TV channel CBA in connection with our plans to walk in the “gran marcha” of carnival coming 21st of February 2012. Here’s the video of that interview.

‘Inside Out’ stands for the emergence of art in the carnaval parade of Curaçao. The familiar walls of the institute and the clinic will be left behind to make a step from inside to outside. This theme will also be used in the works by the students. They are going out with a personal vision on the carnaval. They will play with the contrast between disappearing in the mob and the individual identity.

The project ‘Inside Out’ does not stand by itself. Yasser Ballemans has organized in his position as a co-curator together with KOP the exhibition ‘Op Zunne KOP’ in Breda. Herein the connections between carnaval and the visual arts are explored. The project can be followed on this page and on a big screen in the Electron hangar at KOP in Breda where Willem Claassen in the project ‘Op Zunne KOP’ works on his contribution to this parade.

Between the 2nd of January and 30th of April artist Yasser Ballemans will have a residency at the Instituto Buena Bista on Curacao.

Together with students of the institute he is going to participate in the annual Curacao carnaval parade. Inside Out stands for the emergence of art in the carnaval parade of Curacao. Earlier projects from La Cruz and Helweg on Curacao were:
‘Weta e Lus’ (drug addicts) in cooperation with 5 institutions on Curacao: Foundation Sonrisa, Yabi di Libertat, Brasami, Probation and Dios Yudami.
‘Drop Ar’ ‘Siña Wak, Siña Mira’ an artproject for younger people between 11 and 24 year olds in cooperation with 5 elementary schools and institutions for ‘reeducation and reintegration’ of young offenders and severely maladjusted children.

During the final presentation on January 5th you have the opportunity to see the new installation en works, entitled ‘Curacao Gamble’ that originated during their residency period at the IBB.

Both artists graduated from de Royal Academy of Art in the Hague. From their social engagement they develop projects that combine art, education and welfare. Socially engaged art, art that expresses itself critically on certain things that play out in de community and politics.

La Cruz and Helweg have, next to their own work named ‘Curacao Gamble’ provided a block seminar for the students of the IBB. The block seminar ‘the fable newspaper’ de famous children’s show from the sixties and seventies is the starting point for this block seminar. The animation dolls represent recognizable issues and social topics at the level ok de fablewoods for children, but also very popular with adults because of the ironic and serious overtone. The students will be encouraged to critically and without (self) censoring look at the land in which they live and to subject it to a thorough investigation. This means that de students will collect information (read newspapers) about one or more politicians and the social subject matters on which these politicians stand. After a period of collecting, thinking and discussing, the students will in a playful way work with collected newspaper material, photographs and texts to bring these in visualization in their own way. After first working and sketching on a flat surface, the students are challenged to build a politically engaged artwork/installation.

Every student relates to a certain politician, their topics and visualizes everything in every case via the shape of an animal. References to the famous ‘Animal Farm’ from George Orwell could be found.

During the end-presentation on the 5th of January the students of IBB will also present their work. A few students will also provide a lecture where art –from history and the actuality- fed by protest and social engagement will be presented.

Everyone is welcome to the IBB, for this stimulating beginning of the new year.
